Details Of Post Apocalyptic Bohemia

I collect dog painting & prints

My favorite Buddha on a wall silver leafed by The Husband

I collect American Art Pottery, but only in Green or Turquoise

I can't seem to go for a walk without returning with a rock or a feather. I am a stuff person & the poor Husband has to find a way to make it all work.

Born On This Day- February 29th... James Mitchell

I always wanted to do a long run, fascinated by the notion of playing a character at different dilemmas & dramas over years or decades. I was happy for the experience & the money the few times I was in a play that lasted a while. I once had a very showy role in a theatre event that ran for 18 months. I would have been deeply grateful for a role in a long-running TV soap operas. James Mitchell was one of them. He enjoyed playing the patriarch- Palmer Cortlandt on All My Children from 1979 to 2008. The role came at the right time in his career. At 59, his dancing days were done & his film acting had not really happened.

From Stars In My Crown with Amanda Blake (who would die from HIV in 1989)

Fans of All My Children were probably not aware that the debonair, silver haired, svelte & handsome, Mitchell had been a leading dancer for many years, particularly associated with the celebrated choreographer Agnes de Mille. De Mille: “Mitchell had probably the strongest arms in the business, & the adagio style developed by him & his partners has become since a valued addition to ballet vocabulary".

Mitchel was born on a fruit farm near Sacramento. He was 3 years old his mother left with his 2 younger siblings. His farmer father, feeling unable to bring up his son alone, gave him up to vaudevillian foster parents. Mitchell appeared on stage as part of their act.

At 17, Mitchell moved to LA, where he studied at City College. At the same time, he was introduced to modern dance at the school of the famed teacher/choreographer Lester Horton. Mitchell soon joined Horton's Dance Theatre of Los Angeles & was one of the Lester Horton Dancers who appeared in a few Hollywood musicals in the early 1940s.

My buddy- Professor Walter Kennedy danced with The Bella Lewizky Company for decades, but 40 years earlier, Mitchell was featured in a South Sea Island dance duet with Bella Lewitzky in White Savage (1943), a camp piece starring Maria Montez.

In 1944, Mitchell began his long partnership with De Mille when she cast him as a dancer in the Broadway musical Bloomer Girlstarring my friend- Celeste Holm. He also appeared in the original Broadway productions of Brigadoon (1947) & Paint Your Wagon (1951), choreographed by De Mille.

Mitchell received non-dancing supporting roles in some good movies: In Raoul Walsh's Colorado Territory (1949), he played outlaw Joel McCrea's nasty sidekick; again with McCrea, he was in Stars in My Crown (1950), & in a pair of Anthony Mann dramas, as an indian in Border Incident (1949), & a Mexican in Devil's Doorway (1950).

Mitchell continued in a small roles in a few film musicals in which he could display his dancing skills: The Toast of New Orleans(1950), he has a zany duet with Rita Moreno, & an erotic dance with Cyd Charisse in Deep in My Heart (1954).  The next year, he was reunited with De Mille on the movie version of Oklahoma! for the 20-minute dream ballet sequence.

Ironically, Mitchell did not dance in the best musical in which he appeared- Vincente Minnelli's The Band Wagon (1953), he has the thankless role of Charisse's manager, boyfriend & choreographer, an experience he disliked so much he refused to see the film. In The Band Wagon he abandons Charisse when she chooses Broadway over ballet. Mitchell himself moved to Broadway with roles in Carnival! (1961), & Mack & Mabel (1974). In 1979, Mitchell settled into the long role of Palmer Cortlandt.

Mitchell's partner for 33+ years was costume designer Albert Wolsky. The couple met on the set of The Turning Point, a film set in the ballet world, in1977. Wolosky: “He adored playing mean”. Wolsky is a 2-time Academy Award winning costume designer, for All That Jazz & Bugsy. Most recently he was nominated for his work on the Julie Taymor film- Across the Universe.
Mitchell’s character on All My Children was one of the first to accept Erica Kane's daughter Bianca when she came out as a lesbian. An earlier story line on the show had Cortlandt befriending a gay teen.

My Buddy- Walter knew Mitchell & may wish to weigh in. Mitchell died in 2010, he would have been 23 today, or 92, depending on how you look at it. He had a good run. Let’s toast him today.

Hard to Believe: The Death of Davy Jones

For only the second time in the history of A Shroud of Thoughts (the first was when Doug Fieger of The Knack died), I am too upset to write a proper eulogy. It was today that Davy Jones of The Monkees died at the young age of 66. I have never known a world without Davy Jones. He and The Monkees have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Is it any wonder then that I feel as if I have lost a beloved friend or cousin?

In fact, I cannot remember the first time I ever watched The Monkees. I know from my earliest memories that it was the first TV show I watched loyally. The Monkees was in reruns for much of my childhood and it was a rare thing indeed that I ever missed an episode. I also cannot remember the first time I ever heard a Monkees song. When I was very young The Monkees' songs were still frequently played on the radio. What is more, my sister is much older than me and owned the original LPs from the mid to late Sixties. My brother and I played them so often it is a wonder that they had not worn out.  The Monkees was in many respects the perfect show for me, a show set in a fantasy world where a struggling rock group could fight gangsters and aliens and win. The Monkees' music was also perfect for me. It was some of the earliest and most sophisticated power pop, easily on par with that of The Beatles or The Who.

While Mike Nesmith was always my favourite Monkee, I have to say I always identified with Davy. Like myself he was short and slender. Indeed, in many respects he was the perfect role model for me. Despite being below average in height, he was always confident and charming. And on The Monkees it was always Davy who got the girl. To some that might not seem important, but to a young man who was slightly shorter than most people (and I must point out even I was taller than Davy), it was very important to see someone who did not let his height determine who he was.

Of course, Davy was a role model in more ways than one. From my fellow Monkees fans who were lucky enough to meet him and from reports from various celebrities who had the opportunity to interact with him, Davy was always kind and soft spoken. Quite simply, he was the perfect English gentleman. One could do so much worse than behave in his life as Davy did in his.

Tomorrow I will write a proper eulogy, but for now I will leave you with two of my favourite Monkees songs on which Davy Jones sang lead. The first is "Valleri," written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. The second is "Forget That Girl," written by Chip Douglas.

Leap Day

It's February 29, 2012 - Leap Year Day. As I drove home from work (yea - payday!), I decided I'd take some random pictures to mark the day. Signs of spring outdoors, and yes a wild stuffed piggie.

Cool light pattern from our french patio doors at approximately 4:30 pm

Nifty shadow perspective

This festive plant is sitting on my kitchen table, but I moved it for the light pattern on the floor. I bought it at Calloways on Sunday, just to brighten our February. Love the colors and I hope to pot it later, but I'm waiting in case of a final freeze. Then again, it's 72 degrees today. No wonder weeds are choosing to sprout.

February Valentine candy is long gone. Here's to jelly beans. These are the Starburst sour style. Yeah, yeah, I know - it's early for Easter candy. Mind your own business. Happy Leap Year Day!

Born On This Day- February 29th... Pedro Pablo Zamora

I was still in my 30s when the San Francisco Real World premiered in 1992 on MTV, I smartly stopped watching The Real World, or for that matter, MTV, when I turned 40. The Real World was the start a standard fir reality TV shows: It threw together rednecks, party girls, virgin Christians, substance abusers, goody-2-shoes, gay people & douchey bike messengers & allowed them to fight their tiny culture wars on TV.

Through the 27 seasons, Pedro Zamora, of The Real World: San Francisco in 1994, its 3rd season, continues to make an impression.

Zamora was a Cuban American gay man who died from complications from HIV the day after the San Franciscoseason finale aired. Zamora was diagnosed with HIV in his junior year of high school, & by age 19, he had embarked on a career as an AIDS educator. When the opportunity arose to audition for a spot on The Real World, he saw it as a chance to further his message of AIDS awareness.

The young HIV educator, he was just 22 when he died, was always on message. He brought a scrapbook of his education work to show his cast mates, immediately lectured them on HIV transmission & took them along on his speaking gigs. He & his boyfriend, Sean Sasser, had a tear-jerking commitment ceremony before the cameras. Anyone who saw that season's The Real World cannot get Zamora's story out of their minds.

2009’s- Pedro is a very moving biopic by MTV &  The Real World creators & written by Dustin Lance Black who won an Oscar for Milk. He was still in the closet at the time. The film also includes a reenactment of phone call of appreciation to Zamora & his family. Clinton also introduces the film. In 2010, Pedro writers Dustin Lance Black & Paris Barclay were nominated for a Writers Guild Award. Pedro also received a Humanitas Prize nomination & a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding TV Movie or Mini-Series at the 21st GLAAD Media Awards.

Once The Real Worldseason ended filming, & Zamora fell fatally ill after taping, cast members Pam Ling & Judd Winick rushed cross-country to his side. Their friendship deepened & together they embraced their friend's cause. A year after they moved out of the spotlight, they moved in together. Pam became an M.D. specializing in HIV health issues & Judd writes Green Lantern for DC Comics. They are now married & living in San Francisco. Armistead Maupin spoke at theor ceremony.

Winick’s graphic novel, Pedro and Me: Friendship, Loss, & What I Learned, was published in September 2000. It was awarded 6 American Library Association awards, was nominated for an Eisner Award, & won Winick his first GLAAD award.

In his short life, Pedro Zamora did much to advance  awareness & understanding of HIV, as well as to advance a generation's acceptance of homosexuality. His partner- Sean Sasser is a pastry chef in Portland & my neighbor. When he married Zamora in a commitment ceremony at the Real World house, the audience was not horrified, as they might have been just a decade earlier, but charmed. The romance was,15 years later, nominated for "Favorite Love Story" out 26 seasons of cast members dating & falling in love. Zamora both educated & inspired a generation.

Zamora would have been 12 years old, or 40 years old today. No matter how you count it, it would be a been a better world if he was still with us.

The Sorrow retrasará su nuevo disco

WATCH - STEVEN TYLER MAKES FUN OF JLO'S ALLEGED OSCARS NIP SLIP: Leave it to STEVEN TYLER to bring up JENNIFER LOPEZ' alleged Oscars night nip-slip on "American Idol" last night.

“Who am I?” Tyler said, as he fake-sneezed and ripped open his shirt to reveal his his moobs. “That was an Oscar reenactment, ladies and gentlemen,” quipped RYAN SEACREST, in case someone watching had been under a rock the last 3 days.

Lopez rolled good naturedly with the ribbing, insisting, quote, "There was no nipple!"

ANGELINA'S INFAMOUS RIGHT LEG POSE WAS COPIED FROM JENNIFER ANISTON - THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE!!!: It seems ANGELINA JOLIE and JENNIFER ANISTON have more in common than BRAD PITT ...

They've both flashed a lot of leg on the red carpet. That's Jen on the left at the Golden Globes in January 2010, and Angelina's very similar ensemble and stance at Sunday's Oscars ...

UPDATE - WHITNEY HOUSTON DEATH TO BE RULED ACCIDENTAL: Based on information from, quote, "a source with knowledge of the ongoing investigation," E! News is saying that WHITNEY HOUSTON'S death will be ruled an accident. That's pretty much what everyone has assumed since Houston was found dead in her hotel bathroom on February 11th.

Though the cause of death has been listed as "deferred" pending toxicology test results, "nothing suspicious" has been turned up regarding Houston's physicians, or any other persons of interest related to the case.

The source adds that "[Whitney] was the furthest thing from trying to kill herself" and that the toxicology screening report may be handed in as soon as next week.

Meanwhile ... BOBBY BROWN'S sister Leolah spoke with "Access Hollywood" yesterday and said she doesn't think it was an accident.

She says her attorney told her not to talk about it, but she wants people to know "[Whitney] did not just pass away like that," although she doesn't know exactly what happened.

Leolah added, "If it's the last thing that I do, I'm going to find out what truly happened to my sister."

COULD BE TRUE COULD BE CRAP - CHRIS BROWN WILL BE CHARGED WITH ROBBERY: According to the rarely-reliable Media Take Out gossip site, formal charges will be filed this week against CHRIS BROWN by the Florida State attorney.

The site claims "a person with IMPECCABLE CREDENTIALS" told them Brown will be asked to turn himself in to Miami police and charged with a "snatch and grab robbery."

If Chris is convicted, he faces up to 5 years in a Florida prison. Conviction or not, the probation he recieved from the state of California for beating RIHANNA would likely be revoked as well.

UPDATE - JEWELER SAYS NATALIE PORTMAN *IS* MARRIED: NATALIE PORTMAN and her baby-daddy Benjamin Millepied showed up at the Oscars wearing what LOOKED like wedding rings. Yesterday, Natalie's jeweler told 'Us Weekly' they ARE wedding rings.

There's no word where or when they tied the noose the knot, nor have Portman or her people confirmed THE BIG MISTAKE was made.

BABY POOP: BEN AFFLECK and JENNIFER GARNER finally have a baby boy! There's no word on the kid's name, though.

RELATIONSHIP REPORT - ARE MINKA KELLY AND 'FEZ' HOOKING UP???: Although there were rumors that MINKA KELLY had reunited with New York Yankee DEREK JETER, it looks as though she may be playing the field instead.

According to the ‘New York Daily News’, Minka was spotted getting cozy with WILMER VALDERRAMA Saturday night at in Hollywood. Witnesses say the artist formally known as ‘Fez’ was in da club when Minka arrived, and made it a point to come out and escort her inside.

The paper's source adds they were careful not to appear affectionate once inside the club, but according to a “friend” of Wilmer’s, Minka and the Wilmer, are into each other and “getting to know each other” right now.

New Music- Jack White... Love Interrupted On Such A Winter's Day

I am a fan of White Stripes & the understated songs that suggest something simpler, but the work of Jack White is not for the faint of heart, speaking of murder plots & doors slamming on fingers, to lost friends & fresh enemies.

Love Interruption is not a song that needs a video, & the grey tones & a simple set in the video does not seem very compelling. What becomes the focal point is not the camera work, but the throaty sound of Ruby Amanfu mixed White’s vocals, a combination that shouldn't work, & almost doesn't. Love Interruption works for me in the midst of winter skies & winter sickness & winter regrets.

I want love to
roll me over slowly
stick a knife inside me,
& twist it all around.

I want love to
grab my fingers gently
slam them in a doorway
put my face into the ground

I want love to
murder my own mother
& take her off to somewhere
like hell or up above.

I want love to
change my friends to enemies,
change my friends to enemies
& show me how it's all my fault.

I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt or interrupt me
I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt or interrupt me
I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt, or interrupt me anymore.

I want love to
walk right up & bite me
grab ahold of me & fight me
leave me dying on the ground.

& I want love to
split my mouth wide open
 & cover up my ears,
& never let me hear a sound.

I want love to,
forget that you offended me
or how you have defended me,
when everybody tore me down.

Yeah I want love to
change my friends to enemies,
change my friends to enemies
& show me how it's all my fault.

I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt or interrupt me
I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt or interrupt me
I wont let love disrupt,
 corrupt, or interrupt me anymore.

Born On This Day- February 28th... 2 Gay Directors

2 talented directors share a birthday. I can't help reflect on what a difference it must have made in one man's life to have been in the closet & the other to have been able to be openly & unmistakenly GAY.

The life of Vincente Minnelli, the director of classic MGM musicals like Meet Me in St. LouisGigi & An American in Paris, was as peculiar as the dream ballets that became his trademark. Born Lester Anthony Minnelli in 1903, he grew up the only child in a family of traveling performers in the Midwest. His mother, Mina Mary LaLouche LeBeau, played the ingénue in stock melodramas, while his father, Vincent, conducted the Minnelli Brothers Tent Theater orchestra.

In young adulthood, shy, stammering Lester Minnelli, who had had a penchant for trying on his mother’s clothes, read a biography of the flamboyant painter James McNeill Whistler & decided to reinvent himself as a worldly aesthete, working as a window dresser in Chicago before making his name as a designer of lavish theatrical sets in New York. It was there that he became “Vincente.”

Once he moved to Hollywood as a director in MGM’s stable, Minnelli quickly built a reputation as a fearsome perfectionist, despite his passive, retiring personality. A closeted gay man, Minnelli had been known to sport “light makeup” & yet, he married 4 times , most famously, to Judy Garland & he fathered 2 daughters, including the perpetually re-self-inventing Liza Minnelli.

There is 6’6’’ & Texan, with the improbable name-Tommy Tune who is an actor/dancer/singer/choreographer/director, & the winner of 9 Tony Awards, the only person in theatrical history to win in 4 different categories & to win the same Tony Award 2 years in a row.

Tune danced onto the Broadway scene in the chorus of Baker Street in 1965 & hasn't stopped since. I saw him in Michael Bennetts’s Seesaw in 1973, for which he received raves & his first Tony (Best Featured Actor in a Musical). He directed his first show, the off-Broadway production of The Club in 1976. he directed & choreographed The Best Little Whorehouse in TexasA Day in the Hollywood/ A Night in the Ukraine (his 2nd Tony- Best Choreography), Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9Nine (his 3rd Tony-Best Direction of a Musical), My One & Only (his 4th & 5th Tony-Best Choreography, Best Actor in a Musical). Stepping OutGrand Hotel (Best Choreography, Best Direction of a Musical), & Will Roger's Follies (Best Choreography, Best Musical).

Tune has an art gallery in Tribeca . In his 1997 memoir Footnotes, he writes about what drives him as a performer, choreographer & director, offers stories about being openly gay in the world of theatre, his partners David Wolfe & Michael Stuart, about his days with Twiggy in My One & Only & meeting & working with his many idols.

I find him likable & remarkably talented... & tall. He turns 73 today.

Born On This Day- February 28th... Broadway Baby Bernadette Peters

Happy Birthday, Bernadette Lazzara! Of all the Broadway Divas: Betty, Barbara, Patti, Chita, Kristin, Audra, Chita, Carol, or even Angela, the one with the most special place in my heart & on my stereo is Bernadette Peters. I first saw her in George M! in 1968 & I absolutely fell in love with the voice, the va va voom curves, the cinnamon curls, the dramatic chops, & the crack comic timing. But, it is really about the voice. She has been working on stage for 59 years: Curley McDimpleDames At SeaGeorge M!, On The TownMack & MabelSunday In The Park With GeorgeSong & DanceInto The WoodsThe Goodbye GirlAnnie Get Your Gun, & Gypsy!.

Bernadette does amazing work for animal rights with her organization with Mary Tyler Moore- Broadway Barks & is the author of a popular children’s book of the same name.

I have seen her many times in musicals & in concert. My personal favorite was Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway in 1999. Peters sings with her whole body. Not just a few arm gestures for punctuation, as many excellent singers offer, but the music seems to travel from her toes to the tip of her nose as she bends, reaches & throws her head back to let out the final notes.

Peters is wrapping up a run in Follies on Broadway, a production that started at The Kennedy Center last summer. I believe that her version of Losing My Mind on the cast album is the most moving of all the many takes on this Sondheim ballad.

Peters turns 64 today & she looks terrific. A perfect example of the advantage of staying out of the sun. But again, for me it is all about the voice:

Not So Gray Lady - Jill Abramson

I read about Jill Abramson in More magazine (March 2012 issue. Article by Nina Burleigh) and wanted to feature her today. Her story struck me - hard work, intelligence, tenacity, and a love of words. She's only fifty-eight, a mother of two, and has a book published about her dog. She never plotted to get to the top - intensity, probing questions, and results steered her path.

October 2011, Jill Abramson became executive editor of The New York Times. She's the first female leader of THE paper, and must work hard to keep it relevant in changing times. Her background is Harvard, then investigative reporting, and finally her position as Washington bureau chief during the 9/11 Pentagon attack proved her mettle. She remained calm and directed all aspects of the coverage of that terrible day.

"I have always had a strong desire to get to the bottom of the facts, especially when people say the facts are unknowable," she says of her decision to become a journalist.

"Every word that you write about someone is branded on them, and words are not casual things." I love this quote.

"There are new challenges every hour," she acknowledges. She's working to be more accessible, and looks at innovation and newsroom integration (digital and print) as prime issues for The New York Times. Survival in the publishing industry is key. Sounds to me like they've got the right person for the job.
My favourite outfit that Hanneli wore during NY fashion week*? The Acne motorcyle jacket (amazing, amazing colour) and adorable Miu Miu gingham earrings at Jason Wu.

Recreate Hanneli's look (kind of):
Acne Rita suede aviator jacket (in blush suede - I know it isn't the electric blue but it is a beautiful, soft colour that would last for years).
Miu Miu gingham and plexiglass earrings (these looked so beautiful with the sunlight hitting them)

Aww a new one!! I am booking like crazy.. so it's good secret shoot is still in the works but I am having to order things from the UK .

Five Finger Death Punch - Remember Everything

JLO NIP SLIP DEBATE - HER STYLIST SAYS IT DIDN'T HAPPEN: One of the biggest questions after Sunday's Oscars was whether JENNIFER LOPEZ suffered a wardrobe malfunction. Well, she didn't.

That according to her stylist, who tells Entertainment Weekly the dress was custom made for Jennifer with special built-in cups to prevent such a thing happening. Quote: "While the dress DID give the illusion of sheer-ness, [the] joke's on everyone who wishes they saw something!"

Maybe it *was* some kind of tape-and-shadow optical illusion, but there's no question Lopez had every intention of taking "the girls" out Sunday night. Not only was her Oscar gown incredibly low cut, the dress she wore to all the after parties was equally revealing ...

Meanwhile ... Lopez' "American Idol" co-judge STEVEN TYLER was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" late last night, and after looking at a photo from Sunday night, Tyler concluded Jennifer did NOT have a wardrobe malfunction ...

LISTEN

ANGELINA'S RIGHT LEG: It -- along with JLo's whatever it was -- was the breakout star of the Oscars with it's equally attention-seeking antics. But what's ANGELINA JOLIE'S RIGHT LEG up to today?
It's having a much more low key kind of day, covered up in a pair of trousers and knee-high boots ... although as skinny as she is she barely filled them! Check it, yo.

IS RIHANNA SUPPORTING CHRIS BROWN IN ALLEGED PHONE THEFT CASE???: Word is RIHANNA is standing by CHRIS BROWN as he awaits the decision on whether he'll be charged in the theft of a fan's cell phone. As previously reported, Chris has been accused of snatching an iPhone from a fan who said she snapped a picture of him, and then drove off with it.

According to Radar Online, their source says, "Rihanna has told him she believes [he didn't do it and] has also told Chris that she will stand by him during the investigation, and whatever the future holds."

The source added that Rihanna "has made it very clear to everyone around her that she doesn't want to hear anything negative about Chris. She isn't interested in listening to the fears her friends have about the the two...spending time together."

If Chris is arrested, it is likely the Los Angeles District Attorney's office will seek to revoke his probation from his no contest plea of battery on Rihanna.

CASE CLOSED BETWEEN HEATHER LOCKLEAR AND JACK WAGNER: No charges will be filed in connection with the alleged physical altercation between HEATHER LOCKLEAR and JACK WAGNER in late December.

The two, who called off their engagement last year, appeared at a hearing but decided that they didn't want to pursue the matter further. Jack, by the way, will be on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars". Scroll down for more details.

RELATIONSHIP REPORT - NATALIE PORTMAN REVEALS BLING AT OSCARS: Jennifer Lopez wasn't the only one who revealed something at the Oscars that people are talking about today.

NATALIE PORTMAN has people wondering if she secretly wed her baby daddy after the couple was spotted on the red carpet Sunday wearing rings on their wedding fingers.

Natalie, if you recall, got engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied in December 2010, and gave birth to son Aleph seven months ago. So far, neither has confirmed they made THE BIG MISTAKE.

THE NEW DANCING WITH THE STARS CAST HAS BEEN REVEALED: The Season 14 cast of 'Dancing With The Stars' has been officially announced. Here's who'll be vying for the coveted disco ball trophy this season …

--Maria Menounos, cohost of "Extra", partnered with Derek Hough

--Singer Gavin DeGraw, partnered with last season’s champ, Karina Smirnoff.

--Donald Driver, the Green Bay Packer’s all-time leading wide receiver, with Peta Murgatroyd

--Roshon Fegan, Disney actor and hip hop singer. He’s partnered with Chelsie Hightower.

--Melissa Gilbert of "Little House on The Prairie" fame. Her partner is Maks Chmerkovskiy

--Opera singer Katherine Jenkins. Paired with Mark Ballas.

--Legendary R&B singer Gladys Knight has been paired with Tristan MacManus

--"The View" co-host Sherri Shepherd. Partnered with Maks brother, Val Chmerkovskiy

--Jack Wagner, Heather Locklear’s ex and THE star of "Melrose Place". He’ll be dancing with Anna Trebunskaya

--And Jaleel White, better known as URKEL!!! He's been matched up with Kym Johnson.

COVERSHOT - KATY PERRY: If not for the giant headline, I probably wouldn't have recognized KATY PERRY on the cover of the March issue of "Interview" Between the cat-eyes and the dark, teased-up hair, it barely looks like her. Or at least the current version of Katy. She looks more like Megan Fox in this shot, dontchathink?

On a related note ... RUSSELL BRAND has been spotted with Mexican-born artist Oriela Medellin Amieiro. According to Radar Online, the two met in a yoga class and Amieiro has since been spotted leaving his Beverly Hills home after apparently spending the night.

BABY POOP - UMA THURMAN EXPECTING:  If UMA THURMAN look a little round aroudn the did not have a grape for dinner. That tiny bump is because she's pregnant.

The 41-year-old "Kill Bill" actress is expecting her first child with her boyfriend, and according to a source, due in "late, late summer." Uma has two children -- daughter Maya, 13, and son Levon, 10 -- with ex-husband Ethan Hawke.
Violaine Bernard, Fashion Director Velour Magazine, after Jason Wu, NYC, February 2012.

Recreate Violaine's look (kind of):

Elizabeth and James Evelyn wide-leg trousers (wide) or Rag & Bone leather-trimmed silk-chiffon maxi trousers (super dooper wide)  or Elizabeth and James floral print palazzo pants (so pretty - like wearing a Spring garden on your legs!)

Violaine is quite petite and I think she is a great example of being able to wear the palazzo/wide leg pants trend without being model tall.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards

This year's Academy Awards were bittersweet for me. For the past many years (so many I've lost count) my best friend Brian would call me or I would call him after the telecast had ended and we would dissect the Oscars ceremony (everything from the winners to the ceremony itself). Sadly, this tradition came to an unexpected end with Brian's death on 12 June of last year. While I have always looked forward to the Academy Awards and I have always enjoyed them, this year the ceremony could not help bring to mind that I would not have my best friend with whom to discuss them. This post is then dedicated to his memory.

Over the past many years that I have watched the Oscars (ever since I was a lad), there have been some Academy Awards ceremonies that have infuriated me. Either they dragged on far too long, individuals or films I thought undeserving would win awards, or they would be just plain dull. Fortunately, the 84th Annual Academy Awards was not one of those ceremonies. I was quite happy to see the return of Billy Crystal. The youngsters can go ahead and complain about him not being hip or cool enough, he is funny and that's what counts the most when it comes to Oscar hosts. I particularly enjoyed the usual opening bit with Billy being inserted into various films (especially The Artist and The Adventures of Tin Tin). As is usual with Oscar hosts, some of Mr. Crystal's jokes fell flat, but then it seems to me fewer of his jokes bombed than those of many other hosts. Over all, I thought he did a very good job.

I also have to say that over all I was pleased with the presenters at this  year's Oscars. I thought both Colin Firth and Natalie Portman sounded very sincere in their presentations of the Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress categories, and they both have marvellous voices (honestly, if I could I would sound like Colin Firth). I thought Emma Stone and Ben Stiller's presentation of the Best Visual Effects Award was very funny. It was amusing seeing a perky and nearly hyper Miss Stone interact with an unusually staid Mr. Stiller. I found the cast of Bridesmaids presentation of the shorts categories very funny too--particularly the Martin Scorsese drinking game. I also loved seeing Sandra Bullock speaking fluent German again. In fact, the only presenter with or to whom I cannot say I was happy or indifferent was Angelina Jolie. I honestly do not think flashing one's right leg is a very classy thing to do at the Oscars at all. Beyond that act, however, I must also say that I thought Miss Jolie is far too skinny.  Never mind that she is so thin as to be unattractive, Miss Jolie is so skinny that I have to admit I am now a bit worried for her health. I am a good four inches shorter than Angelina Jolie and I rather suspect I weigh more than she does, and I am not fat by any stretch of the imagination!

One high point for me was a filmed skit by Lord Christopher Guest's troupe portraying a focus group commenting on The Wizard of Oz. I thought the skit was hilarious, particularly Fred Willard and his infatuation with the flying monkeys. I really think this should become a new Oscar tradition, with Lord Guest's troupe portraying a focus group tearing apart a classic film every year.

Of course, as much as I loved the skit by Lord Christopher Guest's troupe, I have to say that the best part of the Oscars were two acceptance speeches. The first came from Christopher Plummer, now the oldest Oscar winner for having won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners. Not only was Mr. Plummer impeccably dressed, but he was charming, funny, and sincere all at the same time. I loved Mr. Plummer's quip to his award, "You're only two years older than me, darling. Where have you been all my life." The other great acceptance speech of the night for me came from Jean Dujardin.  The French actor demonstrated his love for American movie history not only by thanking Douglas Fairbanks, but by giving the Academy an education in its own history as well! Like Mr. Plummer, Mr. Dujardin was also charming and very sincere in his acceptance speech. I can easily see why so many women are in love with him!

While I was happy with the Oscars ceremony for most part, as usual there were things that irked me about this year's Oscar ceremony. I was very unhappy with this year's movie montage. Unless I am mistaken, the oldest movie from which they featured a clip was Midnight Cowboy, which was released in 1969. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences then effectively ignored forty years worth of movie history! What makes this year's movie montage seem even worse is that it occurred in a year when some of the nominees (The Artist and Rango stand out in my mind) paid tribute to the classic films of the past. It would seem that while various motion pictures these days recognise the importance of American film history, the Academy thinks it's more important to show clips from the Twilight movies than Wings, Gone With the Wind or Casablanca!

I must also say that I was very unhappy with this year's In Memoriam segment. For the most part I thought it was tastefully done, although they could have used more clips. That having been said, this year it seemed as if they excluded more classic actors than they usually have. They entirely omitted James Arness (he made movies before his long run on Gunsmoke), James Farentino, Michael Gough, Barbara Kent, Harry Morgan, Charles Napier, Elaine Stewart, and Googie Withers.  While I do not wish to be overly critical of the Academy's choice of whom they did include in the montage, I will point out that each of these actors made many more movies than just four films! Excluding them (some of who, such as Harry Morgan and James Farentino, were very prolific) seems nothing short of a travesty to me. Really, I think the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences needs to hire Turner Classic Movies to do the In Memoriam. TCM always does such a fantastic job with their "TCM Remembers" montages and they include nearly everyone!

Another complaint I had about last night's Oscars ceremony is that  I really think the honorary Oscars should have been awarded at the ceremony proper. Yes, I realise that giving James Earl Jones and Dick Smith their honorary Oscars would have added to the ceremony's running time, but then I would rather see the honorary Oscars handed out than much of the extraneous material that often pads the ceremony out. While I do enjoy Cirque du Soleil, I do not think they are necessarily more important than honorary Oscar winners.

While I know there have been many that have complained that the Best Song nominees were not performed, I have to say that I am not one of them. For me the performance of the Best Song nominees was always a low point in the Oscars ceremony, especially given the Academy's tastes in songs (having to sit through "Al otro lado del río" and "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" qualify as two of my worst experiences watching the Oscars). What disturbed me more is that only two songs were even nominated! One cannot tell me that the Academy could not have found two to three additional songs worthy of being nominated for the Best Song category!

While anyone who has read this blog regularly for the past several years knows I am not that interested in the fashions at the Oscars, I must say that one of the things I did not like at this year's ceremony was Jennifer Lopez's dress. While most of the other actresses were in these beautiful gowns, Jennifer Lopez was in this ugly creation that exposed far too much, umm, J-Lo. I honestly did not think the dress was attractive at all. As much as I hated Miss Lopez's dress, I thought Penelope Cruz's dress looked beautiful. It was absolutely gorgeous, to the point that Penelope Cruz looked like a fairy tale princess. Honestly, I think it was one of the best gowns I have seen at the Oscars for years. I guess while I am discussing fashion, I should mention that Uggie the Dog from The Artist looked adorable in his bow tie. He was definitely the best dressed dog at the Oscars.

I suppose I have discussed the ceremony itself enough and I should move onto the awards. This year I cannot say I had any strong preferences as to who should win in most of the categories. This was partially because I did not get to see some of the nominees, but also because it seemed to me that many of the nominees were worthy of winning. I must confess that I was rooting for Tree of Life to take both Best Picture and Best Director. I have always been a huge fan of Terrence Malick (and not just because we share the same first name) and I do feel that he has been overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for too long. After Tree of Life I was hoping that Hugo would win. While I have not yet seen Hugo, I am both a huge fan of Martin Scorsese and the book upon which it is based, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (if you enjoy young adult fiction, you must read this book). That having been said, I am not at all unhappy that The Artist won both Best Picture and Best Director. Indeed, while I doubt that The Artist will see a new era of silent films, I think it could make the motion picture industry more open to black and white films. I also think it could lead some movie viewers to seek out the original, classic silent movies, which could result in them becoming more widely available. Regardless of what one thinks of The Artist (the first silent film to win a major award in 83 years), then, I cannot see how any classic film buff can claim its winning Best Picture is a bad thing!

One category on which I did actually have strong feelings was Best Animated Feature Film. For one thing, I must admit that I am shocked that The Adventures of Tin Tin was not even nominated! There were many animation fans who thought it was the best animated film of the year. That having been said, I am very glad that Rango won. I honestly think it was the best animated film of the year. Not only is very funny and intelligently written, but for classic movie fans (especially fans of Westerns) it has a whole host of classic movie references. In many ways it is to animated films what the The Artist is to live action films.

Another category on which I did have strong feelings was the animated short film category. I really wanted The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore to win, which it fortunately did. This is a simply amazing animated short, that includes virtually every possible form of animation, from traditional cel animation to stop motion to CGI. It is on YouTube, so if you haven't seen it you have no excuse not to see it now!

Here I must say that it was good to see Christopher Plummer win an Oscar. My sister was actually shocked to learn that not only had he never won an Oscar, but he was only first nominated for one in 2010! I was also happy to see "Man or Muppet" by Bert McKenzie win for Best Song (even if there were only two nominees *grumble*). I honestly think it is perhaps the best song to have been nominated in the category in literally years and certainly better than its competition ("Real in Rio," from the movie Rio).

Over all, I must say I was not particularly disappointed in last night's Oscars, although obviously there are things I thought they could have handled better. I think the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences needs to make sure that their montages include movies from the entirety of the Academy's history and not just the last forty years. I also think that perhaps the Academy should simply let TCM handle the in Memoriam montage, as the Academy has proven over the years they can't be trusted to handle it themselves! I also think someone better buy Angelina Jolie a cheeseburger. Or better yet, several. With those caveats in mind, I must say that I did enjoy last night's ceremony a good deal. I thought Billy Crystal was funny, as were Emma Stone and the cast of Bridesmaids. I loved both Christopher Plummer and Jean Dujardin's acceptance speeches. I thought Penelope Cruz's dress was beautiful. And I thought Uggie the Dog was so cute in his bowtie. Actually, that is one thing they really need for next year's Oscars. They really need have Uggie back at next year's Oscars, and may be some other dogs! Contrary to what critics may say, there have never been enough dogs at the Oscars.
