Composer John Barry Passes On

John Barry, who composed scores for James Bond films and many other movies, passed on 30 January 2011 at the age of 77. According to the BBC he died of a heart attack.

John Barry was born John Barry Prendergast in York on 3 November 1933. His father managed various cinemas throughout York, leading young John Barry to take an interest in movies. He showed a talent for music early, learning piano and trumpet. It was while serving in the military in Cyprus that Mr. Barry began performing as a musician. In the mid Fifties he served as an arranger for Ted Heath's Orchestra. In 1957 he formed his own band, The John Barry Seven. It was in 1959 that he broke into television, composing the theme to the series In 1960 he broke into movies, writing the score for the movie Never Let Go. Over the next few years he composed the score for the movie Beat Girl (1960) and the 1961 Girl on the Roof.

Eventually John Barry would come to the attention of the producers of a film called Dr. No, with whose score the producers were unhappy. John Barry gave them a new score (although Monty Norman would be credited with the "James Bond Theme"). John Barry's success with Dr. No would lead him to score most of the Bond films up to The Living Daylights (1987), as well as such films as Man in the Middle (1963), Zulu (1963), A Jolly Bad Fellow (1964), The Ipcress File (1965), The Knack...and How to Get It (1965), King Rat (1965), Born Free (1966), The Wrong Box (1966), The Quiller Memorandum (1966), Petulia (1968), The Lion in Winter (1968), They Might Be Giants (1971), King Kong (1976), The Deep (1977), The Game of Death (1978), The Black Hole (1979), Howard the Duck (1986), Dances with Wolves (1990), Chaplin (1992), The Scarlet Letter (1995), Playing by Heart (1998), and Enigma (2001).

Mr. Barry also composed extensively for television, including the themes for the shows The Human Jungle, Juke Box Jury, Vendetta, The Newcomers, Discs a Go-Go, The Persuaders, The Adventurer, and Great Mysteries.

John Barry was definitely one of the greatest film composers of all time. While "The James Bond Theme" itself is credited to Monty Norman, the scores of Dr. No and the further James Bond movies were all written by John Barry. Additionally, John Barry would compose such iconic scores as the ones for Born Free, The Lion in Winter, Mary Queen of Scots, and Dances with Wolves. His style was bigger than life, which made it perfectly suited for spy films such as the Bond movies, The Ipcress File, and The Quiller Memorandum. Few film composers achieved as much as John Barry did.

Brian "Head" Welch - Love

An Imagined Conversation

"Hello. I'm here."
"Who the fuck are you?"
"I'm here to play the main stage at 9pm."
"Good one. I think you've got the wrong place, buddy."
"No, seriously, I'm the main act."
"You."
"Yes, me. I'm on the bill right there."
"No, sir. On the bill we have Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, and George Jones playing a tribute to Waylon Jennings."
"Yes, and me."
"Sir, do you know where you are? You're at the Grand Ole Opry. Only country legends play here."
"Yes, I do play music from my country, too. But I'm mainly a classical guitarist. You can hear a lot of Spanish influence in my last CD, 'Romantico.'"
"Lissen, buddy. You're not playing shit anywhere here. Step aside. We're waiting for Willie Nelson to arrive."
"Like I said– I'm here!"
CHARLIE SHEEN-ANIGANS: Two days after being rushed to the hospital and reportedly being treated for a hernia, CHARLIE SHEEN has checked in to an undisclosed treatment facility.

Charlie’s decision to go to rehab is a bit surprising, considering how many people were quoted Friday as saying Charlie didn’t think he had a problem. Charlie himself being one of them.

Saturday, Charlie sent a text to RadarOnline that read, quote, “I’m fine. People don’t seem to get it.... Guy can’t have a great time and do his job also?” He ended the text by calling his critics and detractors a “bunch of turds.”

(--The move has forced CBS’s Two and a Half Men to suspend production until ... well, whenever Charlie is ready to work again.)

In other Rehab News ... 1.) DAVID ARQUETTE has left rehab a month after seeking help for "alcohol and other issues." Presumably to make room for Charlie. Ha! J/K. David checked out of a treatment center yesterday.

2.) 18 year old Disney star DEMI LAVATO has finished her treatment as well.

Demi checked in to the center in late October for "emotional and physical issues" after allegedly punching one of the Jonas Brothers' dancers in the face.

BLOW BY BLOW DETAILS: Kacey Jordan - one of the mattress actresses who was with Charlie during his 36 hour binge - was all over the TV and ‘net talking about the now infamous night. She tells TMZ Charlie was chugging vodka, smoking huge amounts of crack and watching porn before being taken by ambulance to the hospital. (Watch her play-by-play here.)

Oh, and Jordan also claims Charlie gave her a check for $30,000 which, of course, she immediately cashed.

ROMANCE REPORT: 1.) TMZ is reporting TONY PARKER is now free to send inappropriate texts to any woman he chooses to. Tony's lawyer walked into a San Antonio courthouse Friday with the required papers to officially ended his marriage to EVA LONGORIA. Word is all issues connected with the divorce were resolved amicably.

2.) "My Name Is Earl" star JAIME PRESSLEY filed divorce papers herself late last week. She's citing the classic "irreconcilable differences", and is asking the judge to deny her husband any spousal support.

SNAPSHOT: TAYLOR SWIFT celebrating her accomplishments with a party at the Hard Rock in Nashville this past Friday night …

Taylor's family, friends and music industry colleagues were on hand to present her with awards for number-one radio single and number-one music video for "Mine," as well as recognizing her historic million-selling debut week for her album “Speak Now” and for being the best-selling artist of 2010.

BRITNEY WALKS DOWN THE AISLE: BRITNEY SPEARS walked down the aisle Saturday in Miami.

No, not with Husband #3. Brit-Brit didn't get married. She was the bridesmaid in her assistant and close friend Brett Miller's wedding.

WTW???!!!: How’s this for two worlds colliding: JUSTIN BIEBER and OZZY OSBOURNE are co-starring in a commercial that will run during the third quarter of the Super Bowl. And judging from this picture that's making the rounds online, it will involve Justin and Ozzy wearing "Tron"-like costumes …

Speaking of the Big Game … "Glee" star LEA MICHELE will sing "America the Beautiful" during the pre-game show, CHRISTINA AGUILERA will perform the National Anthem, and the BLACK EYED PEAS are doing the halftime show.

Resurrecting Dead Celebrities....For Commercials

In the Nineties there was a disturbing trend in American television commercials in using often long dead celebrities. The cycle began in 1987 with an advert in which Fred Astaire danced not with Ginger Rogers, but with a Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner. Dirt Devil apparently thought the spot was successful, as they would follow it up with further commercials featuring the long dead Fred Astaire.

Sadly, it would not be long before other companies would follow Dirt Devil's suit in using dead stars to advertise their products. In a 1991 Diet Coke commercial, Elton John played for Humphrey Bogart, and Louis Armstrong. Diet Coke would follow up this ad with one featuring Cary Grant, Gene Kelly, and Groucho Marx. In 1997 John Wayne was featured in a commercial for Coors Light. The trend towards using dead celebrities in commercials would continue into the Naughts. In 2005 Gene Kelly's "Singin' in the Rain" sequence from the movie of the same name was used in a commercial for the Volkswagen Golf. Much to the relief of classic film buffs, the cycle appeared to end not long after that. Sadly, it would seem that another commercial recently debuted, featuring two more dead celebrities.

The offender is once again Volkswagen, this time using Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor in an ad for the Jetta. Below is the offending commercial:

Personally, I had hoped that this particular trend in commercials had ended in the Naughts. Sadly, it seems as if Volkswagen wishes to revive it again. My objections to this spot and all the others which have gone before it are quite simple, and I believe that they are shared by most classic film fans. The first is that the use of a long dead celebrity in an advertisement is simply demeaning to that celebrity. This holds true of having Fred Astaire dance with a Dirt Devil and even more true of having John Wayne appear in something possibly as objectionable as an advert for light beer. Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, Groucho Marx, John Wayne, and the other stars who have been used in these adverts were very serious about their craft and are highly regarded by critics and fans alike. To use them in commercials for vacuum cleaners, cars, and beer is treating them as something of a joke, something they most certainly are not.

The second is that these commercials are obviously being made without the permissions of the stars. After all, the dead cannot exactly give permission to advertisers to use their image or their work in a commercial. It is quite possible that Gene Kelly would have objected to advertising Volkswagen cars and I think very likely the Duke would have objected to advertising Coors Light. Being a Coca-Cola drinker myself, I know I would be very unhappy if I was famous and after I died my image was used to sell Pepsi....

My hope is that this latest commercial featuring Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor will be the last commercial to use dead celebrities in their adverts. To me it is demeaning to the stars themselves and, given they cannot give permission for their images or work to be used, it is disrespectful as well. I must admit, I would think twice of buying any product in which the manufacturer used the image or work of one of my favourite stars from the past.

It's a Zoo Out There

72 degrees in Dallas in January. Can't let weather like that go to waste. "Ray, what shall we do?" I checked the paper and it's Penguin Days at the Dallas Zoo. The promotion is that prices go down along with the temperature. So, today was an aberation but the prices for January and February are $5 admission, $7 to park, and yes - you have to ride the monorail for $3. I've lived in Dallas more than twenty-five years and had never ventured to this zoo. I was suitably impressed. Now I didn't get up close to the lions - this female looked ready to pounce on something.

On the monorail ride, you enter the river flow habitat. It's quite pretty.
This rhino was hungry. He kept pacing back and forth in front of a door. We figured he knew it was chow time and the maitre'd was running late.

This little fellow looked perfectly content, chewing on something and surveying the land from on high.

I love giraffes - so goofy looking and yet graceful. The new Wilds of Savannah area featured elephants, giraffes, and a feel for an African safari. Well done and entertaining. This fellow knew some food was in reach, if only the kids dangling over the rail would throw it.
So, no reading or writing this weekend. Just too darn pretty to stay indoors. It's obnoxious when so many folks (hey Dad!) are shoveling snow back east. However, Ray and I felt it was our solemn duty to take advantage of the sunshine - we wore our t-shirts and absorbed sunshine and zoo atmosphere.
A few quotes - one young girl (age 7 or so) said, "Mom, I just love the zoo."
One young fellow (age 5 or so) - "This is boring."
All in all, it was fun to watch kids spot hidden creatures - nothing quite like a pit viper in the Reptile House. Yikes!
Ray and I spent about three hours wandering the grounds. Thanks Dallas Zoo - well done!

Comedian Charlie Callas Pases On

Comedian Charlie Callas passed on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the age of 83.

Charlie Callas was a brilliant comedian with a gift for one liners. His delivery came at a mile at minute. He also had a gift for making the most unusual sounds, from the sound of  a duck to the sound of a shotgun. He could also think very fast on his feet, able to extemporise the most hilarious lines on the spot. Mr. Callas was a very funny comic and he will be missed.

Some work birding in the snow

Some of my latest bird sightings:

We've been getting huge flocks of American crows here for the last couple of winters; these crows were photographed right across the street from my work. I wish I'd captured the flock of probably 200+ swarming in the air, along with a Red-tailed who swooped through the flock and disappeared; I wasn't fast enough with the camera. Still, I got some good pictures despite the overcast sky. I like that bird on the right in the second photo; it looks like he's strutting.

Another day, I saw this bird, which I'm fairly sure is a Common Raven. I was flying down the highway when I passed him and he looked so huge I was sure it was a raven and not a crow:
He was absolutely HUGE, and I'm pretty sure I captured the "Roman nose" here. I didn't get to see him fly so I could check out the tail to make sure. Note the snow in the photos. Could someone confirm crow or raven?

I also saw another Rough-legged Hawk:The other photos I took were terrible; he was a dark-morph, so about all you can see is his little beak. Rough-legs are everywhere around here this year! Today, a local listserver posted seeing seven!

Torstein Horgmo Triple Cork Stir the Web!

The last Friday, January 28, 2011 performance of Torstein Horgmo marked a new history in X Games. He successfully made a triple cork in snowboarder competition in Aspen, Colombia. According to report, he is the first player who made this trick and guess what, it was the first thing that happened in one of the most aspiring sports in television. Torstein earned his gold medal in the game and he is the pride of the Norwegian people. ESPN recently noted his interview when he tried to make an attempt something like of what we don't expect last Friday evening. He mentioned that it was the most stupid thing he used to try on his whole life but now, people are enjoying his YouTube video because of that unusual trick that make a history in sports.

In the other side of the story of Torstein Horgmo, as he finished snowboard jump, he kicked his helmet to the crowd. Giving it as a souvenir from his last Friday of January 28, 2011 tricky moves. And according to him, he doesn't even expect that successful jump with his snowboard. See the following video below to see how Torstein made that impossible triple cork:

Ill Niño - This time´s for real

CHARLIE'S SHEEN-ANIGANS: CHARLIE SHEEN was rushed to the hospital yesterday late morning with severe abdominal pains. Of course, everyone immediatley thought 'overdose' ... well, except for me. I thought for sure he'd been crushed to death under a pile of porn stars. But I digress ... TMZ, however, claims he suffered a hernia, not an overdose. ??? What did he snort too hard???

Charlie was reportedly in the middle of a marathon bender with five women - including two porn stars - before he ended up in an ambulance at 7 a.m. During his 36-hour "party," he allegedly had a briefcase full of cocaine delivered to his home and was smoking the drug non-stop, while watching and critiquing porn with a porn star prior to the 911 call.

As for the hernia, TMZ claims Charlie's had it for years. It's what's known as a hiatal hernia. That's a condition that affects the upper part of the stomach and the esophagus. It causes acid reflux, and can also produce symptoms in the chest similar to those of a heart attack.

A friend of his told the TV show "Extra" he aggravated it by ... wait for it .. LAUGHING TOO HARD while watching a TV show.

As far as we know, he's okay now. ... His parents were with him yesterday, as was ex-wife DENISE RICHARDS. Charlie's other ex-wife, BROOKE MUELLER, did NOT go. She told reporters, quote, "I'm not going to the hospital, Charlie's doing good.

ANOTHER KENDRA SEX TAPE SURFACES: Less than a year after "Kendra Exposed" became a huge success, a new KENDRA video - this one featuring Kendra with with a high school friend named Taryn - is being shopped around. An insider tells Radar Online, "It's a long tape, about 45 minutes. And there is nothing left to the imagination."

Like the previous tape, this one was shot by her ex-boyfriend. There's no word when this one will come out or if Kendra will try to block it like she did the last one. Like most celebrities, though, Kendra ended up signing a deal to let them release that first sex tape and has since made millions off of it.

"WORST CELEB INFLUENCE": The category is "Worst Celebrity Influence." And the winner is ... the bong-smoking MILEY CYRUS! At least according to the tweens who voted in the AOL poll.

Miley took 58-percent of the vote, beating out the rehabbing LINDSAY LOHAN, accused baby-daddy assaulter and MTV "Teen Mom" Amber Portwood, and the currently rehabbing troubled Disney star DEMI LOVATO. It's a repeat for Miley, by the way. She received the dis-honorable title last year, too.

KATE HUDSON IN DENIAL: KATE HUDSON is denying rumors she's engaged to her baby daddy. She tells People.com, "I don't like putting that sort of pressure on it, and I don't feel it necessary to get married." She also doesn't know what she's having, but, quote, "It feels like a girl."

In Other Baby News ... 1.) ARE ENRIQUE IGLESIAS and ANNA KOURNIKOVA EXPECTING? The website X17Online seems to think so. They're reporting the long-term couple announced the news to a small group of friends recently. No confirmation or denial from either of their reps yet.

2.) "Top Chef" host PADMA LAKSHMI is squaring off against her ex over their 11-month-old daughter. According to the New York Post the baby daddy filed a suit in Manhattan Supreme Court asking for custody of Krishna, because Padma allegedly won't give him more time with her.

ROMANCE REPORT: SCARLETT JOHANSSON and DREW BARRYMORE'S ex, JUSTIN LONG, were seen checking out a concert Wednesday night in L.A. Sources described them to People as being "flirty."

But her rep is sticking to the "they're just friends" line, insisting, "They've worked together [on He's Just Not That Into You]. They're not dating."

WHO'S THE BIGGEST LOSER??? WE REPORT, YOU DECIDE:  Which Reality TV personality is hooked up with the biggest NFL loser? The nominees are former "Hill" cast member KRISTIN CAVALLARI, KENDRA WILKINSON, AND JESSICA SIMPSON

Kristin had the bad fortune to fall in love with Bears QB JAY CUTLER, who last weekend shocked football fans every where when he came out of the championship game with a mysterious injury he doesn’t even remember getting. An injury many in the sports world say 31 other quarterbacks would’ve played through - especially with the Superbowl on the line.

Then there’s Kendra. Her husband, HANK BASKETT, has been traded 5 times in 5 years, and is best known for not coming up with a crucial onside kick in last year’s Superbowl while playing for the Colts. It’s unlikely he’ll still be in the NFL next season.

And finally, there's Jessica Simpson. Simpson is engaged to be married to ERIC JOHNSON, a former tight end who hasn’t worked a day since being cut by New Orleans in 2008 and who's referred to by "friends" and "sources" as a 'Gold digger'.

So who's hooked up with the biggest loser? We report, you decide.

Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes R.I.P.

Gladys Horton of The Marvelettes, the girl group who set the stage for the Motown girl groups to come, passed on January 26, 2011 at the age of 66. The cause was complications from a stroke.

Gladys Horton was born in Detroit in 1944. She took an interest in singing while still fairly young. She was only fifteen when she formed the Casinyets with Georgeanna Tillman, Katherine Anderson and Juanita Cowart. and Georgia Dobbins. A performance at a 1961 talent show led to one of their teachers arranging an audition for Barry Gordy at Motown. The label signed The Marvelettes, making them Motown's first girl group. It was in the summer of 1961 that Motown released their first single, "Please, Mr. Postman," which went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group would have another hit with "Playboy" and "Beechwood 4-5789" in `1962.

From 1963 to 1964, none of The Marvelettes' singles reached the top forty, but they would make a comeback in late 1964 with "Too Many Fish in the Sea," which went to #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and in 1965 with "Don't Mess with Bill," which went to #7. They would have three more hit singles, "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game," "When You're Young and in Love," and "My Baby Must Be a Magician." Gladys Horton would leave The Marvelettes in 1967, in part to care for her disabled son. Miss Horton would later reunite with The Marvelettes in the Eighties, performing as Gladys Horton and The Marvelettes.

The Marvelettes would have an huge impact on the history of pop music. As Motown's first girl group, they paved the way for such groups as Martha and the Vandellas and The Supremes, as well as girl groups on other labels, such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las. Much of the reason for the group's success was Gladys Horton's powerful voice. She sang lead on their major hits, including their first one, "Please, Mr. Postman." It is significant that the group's fortunes declined after she left in 1967. As a lead vocalist for one of the earliest girl groups, Gladys Horton will be remembered.

January Jolly Reads

Alice Munro is a smooth writer covering complex emotions and the unpredictability of life. If you are looking for happiness, this book might make you feel better, since her characters are rather miserable. I enjoyed the writing in these stories - descriptions, dialogue, and quirky twists of entangled lives kept me interested and yet not entertained. Each little world of thirty pages, fraught with anger, sadness, and pain, left me bereft of feelings, hollowed out inside and anxious. So, for reading pleasure, I can't recommend this book. For a master class in writing, Alice Munro's Too Much Happiness gets an A plus.
Michael Lewis' Home Game is heartfelt, well-written, and at times appallingly funny. He kept a journal as his kids were born. Instead of sunny delight and enthusiasm for fatherhood, Lewis discusses why it is parents don't hurl babies off balconies after many sleepless nights. His exhaustion, his descriptions of reality - his two girls arguing over everything, and his realization that he's more of the third string quarterback kept me chuckling throughout the book.
P. 42 At some point in the last few decades, the American male sat down at the negotiating table with the American female and - let us be frank - got fleeced. The agreement he signed, foisted all sorts of new paternal responsibilities on him and gave him nothing of what he might have expected in return. Not the greater love of his wife, who now was encouraged to view him as an unreliable employee. Not the special love of his child, who, no matter how many times he fed and changed and wiped and walked her, would always prefer her mother in a pinch.

p. 108 Small children are also a mood altering substance with financial consequences
p. 109 I know for a fact that my children are insane
p. 154 I've sometimes felt that we are using the wrong manual to fix an appliance - that say we're trying to repair a washing machine with the instructions for the lawn mower. But my wife presses on, determined to find room enough for three children's happiness.
Home Game is a quick, entertaining read and Mr.Lewis' love of his three kids, wife, and life shines through. I relished his exasperation, trials, and down home astonishment at family life in general.
p.187 Like dreams, these fatherhood moments are easily forgotten, and no doubt also a lot more interesting to the teller than to anyone else.
Michael Lewis' writing will keep you interested.
IS JENNIFER ANISTON NOT ADOPTING MEXICAN BABY???: JENNIFER ANISTON is usually denying romance rumors, but this week her peeps are setting the record straight on some baby gossip started by Star magazine.
Her rep - Steven Huvane - tells People magazine that Jen "is not adopting a baby from Mexico, nor does she have a nursery in her home and she has not hired a nanny. It is all a work of fiction."

However ... There are those in Hollywood who believe a denial from Huvane is just as good as a confirmation from someone. Steven, you see, has a reputation for being the #1 liar in Tinseltown.

The believers cite these previous Jen denials as proof: In November of ‘99, he denied BRAD and Jen were dating ... Two weeks before their breakup, he said “They’ll be spending the holidays together. there’s no split. They’re fine” ... In July of 2005, he denied multiple reports Aniston was dating her co-star at the time, VINCE VAUGHN, calling them “totally false”.

WHY JAKE GYLLENHAAL REALLY TOOK TAYLOR SWIFT TO DINNER LAST WEEK: Do you remember us relaying reports to you last week that JAKE GYLLENHAAL and TAYLOR SWIFT were spotted having lunch at a Nashville dinner? One eyewitness told People, "They were cordial to one another, but not affectionate."

Well, that's because according to “US Weekly”, he did it “for closure”. He didn't feel he ended things right, and wanted to talk to her face to face.

You have to wonder, though, since whatever they had — real or perceived — was over, and Jake had already reportedly ended things via text, why fly so far to do it in person instead of over the phone?

Could it be he learned for some one else’s mistake? Like, say, JOE JONAS

IDOL LUNACY: Vernika Patterson, one of last night’s “American Idol” wannabees, is convinced she didn't get a "Welcome to Hollywood" because she's fat. Click the pic to watch the clip. We report, you decide.
Speaking of “Idol” … You can forget all the talk it’s on its last legs: “Idol” still towers above everything else on TV. Last week’s premiere episodes were seen by an average of nearly 12 million viewers, the next biggest series not on cable drew about half of that

Meanwhile ... PAULA ABDUL left the show in a huff after they wouldn't pay her what she thought she was worth. Well, whatever CBS is paying her to star in “Live to Dance” is way too much. After a pretty decent first couple of shows, last Wednesday’s episode drew about 1/12th the audience of “Idol”, making it was the least-watched original series on CBS.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE: "My weight is always going up and down. I'm always fighting that." -- KHLOE KARDASHIAN, in a video blog on her website while denying pregnancy rumors.

Pehaps she should make a habit of standing next to husband LAMAR ODOM as often as possible. Check out how petite he makes her look ...
