In the end, it was all about chemistry.
Sunday night saw an usual three-way ratings battle, but AMC took the night with the fifth season premiere of “Breaking Bad,” one of the best shows in TV history. (Here’s my review http://sfg.ly/NthjU2)
Walter White and co. were up against the premiere of the USA channel’s “kinda ripped from the headlines” melodrama “Political Animals,” and, to some extent, the new episode of Aaron Sorkin‘s “Newsroom” on HBO. USA cracked open its piggy bank to fund a fairly substantial ad campaign for “Animals,” created by Greg Berlanti and starring Sigourney Weaver as a Hillary-esque secretary of state.
Still, “Bad” pulled in 2.9 million viewers, the highest number of viewers yet for a single episode. That’s a 14 percent increase over the audience for the fourth season opener. The number also includes a 34 percent spike in the number of viewers in the 18-49 category.
“Animals” didn’t fare as well, pulling in just 2.6 million viewers, which is somewhat surprising because of the hype and because many critics, while not finding heaps of substance in it, thought it was fun. I didn’t. http://sfg.ly/MjgxHN
The “Breaking Bad” win is particularly noteworthy, though, because it doesn’t include anyone who subscribes to the Dish network. As many know, Dish has dropped AMC at the moment, but even the absence of that sizable block of viewers wasn’t enough to keep “Bad” from setting a new record.
And you know what? This Sunday’s episode is even better than the season opener.
