ABC traced a 74 percent spike in Provigil use over the last four years, and many are taking it without a prescription.
Doctors say there are rare cases of people developing a life-threatening rash from using the drug, but most do not develop side effects.
However, doctors warn there have been no studies on the long-term effects of Provigil.
