The U.S. women's soccer team found itself in a hole on Wednesday when France jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2012 London Olympics.
But you almost knew what would happen next. The U.S. women would come roaring back, led by young superstar Alex Morgan.
Ever since her performance in the 2011 Women's World Cup, Morgan has been taking the world by storm. And on Wednesday in the U.S. women's opening group stage match against the French, Morgan made her mark once again.
After veteran Abby Wambach scored in the 19th minute, making it a one-goal difference, Morgan simply finished France.
Morgan scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute, then capped off the game, 4-2, with yet another goal in the 66th minute as the U.S. women stunned the French.
We saw this in the 2011 World Cup when Morgan scored against France and Japan in the semifinals and final respectively. That was a glimpse at Morgan becoming a star.
Stars not only step up, they step up when their teams need them most, and Wednesday was a shining example of Morgan's star power. She's not only one of the most dangerous offensive players on the planet, but also she makes it count. She had three shot attempts on Wednesday, and two of them found the back of the net. She's become an even more efficient player since last year.
Will Alex Morgan continue to dominate?
Will Alex Morgan continue to dominate?
The U.S. women face Colombia on Saturday, a team that lost 2-0 against North Korea. The favorites should have no trouble finishing off the Colombians, and more than likely Morgan will once again rise to the forefront.
Morgan's barrage on Wednesday was only a preview of what awaits for the 23-year-old. You better believe she has more in store as the U.S. women attempt to capture their third consecutive gold medal.
