Olympics-bound Hope Solo appears nude in the Body Issue of ESPN The Magazine. The 2012 release has some surprise participants. However, the story of the U.S. National Soccer Womens Team goalie is interesting in why she decided to strip down ahead of the summer Games in London.
Monday, ESPN released photos of athletes chosen to shed their gear for this year's cover of the Body Issue. Among those selected was 30-year-old Hope Solo (shown in this photo). The magazine interviewed the tenacious soccer goalie and learned some interesting things about the girl inside. Hint: don't call her "sexy."
"I'm 30, and it's only in the last four years that I've embraced my figure. When I was younger I was a complete tomboy. Then in college I started emerging out of the tomboy stage and dressing differently. It was like, "Hey, I have a very athletic-looking body.
"I used to be self-conscious mostly about my arms and shoulders -- they're so broad, people assumed I was a swimmer or a volleyball player. It was difficult for me to wear a halter dress or a small tank top; I thought the first things people would see were my arms and shoulders. I remember trying to get out of lifting weights in college because I didn't want to bulk up. I would do more reps to avoid putting on too much muscle mass. Or I would skip certain power exercises like cleans -- I always tried to get out of cleans -- and dead lifts. But now, it's my arms and my shoulders that I'm most proud of. I appreciate my athletic look."
Solo says she's had her share of marriage proposals and invitations to military balls. However, she is in no rush to get into a relationship or get hitched. Her primary goal now is to repeat her gold medal performance from 2008 in Beijing at the 2012 summer Olympic Games in London.
Hope Solo in the Body Issue of ESPN The Magazine will likely received warm praise. Recall that she was a favorite in "Dancing With The Stars." While she did not win the top crown, the U.S. women's soccer player and Olympics hopeful will likely win the gold for posing in the buff.
