Occupy Activists Prepare to Protest Political Conventions; Occupy Tampa: Shut Down Bain Capital

TAMPA, FL -  It was around this time last year that the Occupy Wall Street movement rose up to "occupy" space in cities around the nation. While some wondered if it might be signs of an Arab Spring Uprising style movement, police, weather and other obstacles pretty much broke up all the protest movements around the country.

Now, however, as the Republican National Convention nears and Tropical Storm Isaac prepares to become a Hurricane and head to Tampa as well, some of the people behind the Occupy Tampa movement are also preparing.

Federal agencies have sent out warnings that "anarchists" plan to target the RNC in Tampa with various acts of mischief, including possibly blocking travel on key bridges into the area. However, with tropical storm Isaac about to grow up and develop into a possible hurricane, the planned protests may end up with a lot of people wet - and possibly in danger.

Occupy Tampa has been set up in Voice of Freedom park, which is owned by Joe Redner, a local strip club owner. While he has said that he wants everyone gone from his property by September 15th due to complaints from people living in the neighborhood, he has said people can use the park up until that point, which means there will be some people there possibly for the RNC in Tampa. The park isn't too close to downtown, however, so it remains to be seen if it will be used extensively.

The Occupy Tampa General Assembly released the following statement:

We will peacefully protest Bain Capital on August 30th which is the day that Mitt Romney will give his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, FL. We will use this opportunity to protest and raise awareness about Bain Capital’s business practices. Hopefully this will pressure Bain Capital to behave ethically.

There is a very good chance that whatever happens in Tampa, it is going to be blogged and televised.
