“He’s well down the list – he will have to really do extraordinarily well here,” said Olazabal, when asked about Harrington’s chances of boarding the plane to Chicago. “We’ve known Padraig, he’s a very methodical player – he really works hard at it.
“I’ve played with him a couple of times during this year. From tee-to-green his game has been fairly good, but I think his putting has let him down this year so far. Three weeks left – if he really does extraordinarily well, he can have a great chance of making the team still. But it’s going to be up to him.”
In other words, do not expect a captain‘s pick when he names the side on Aug 26. That would be a controversial snub, despite his poor showing in the last two matches. Harrington almost dropped out of the world’s top 100 earlier this season, but he has also finished eighth in The Masters and fourth in the US Open this season.
Inevitably, there will be rumours of a rift, although Harrington denies these whispers. “I get on with Jose, but it’s quite clear,” said the 40 year-old. “With one pick already basically gone on Ian Poulter [12th in the standings] it leaves very little options. But if you look at who’s not in the automatic places, it has to be a rookie Jose’s thinking of picking. So there you go.”
With the players at ninth, 10th and 11th in the standings all flopping here, Olazabal’s stance on Harrington does seem baffling. No, he has not been putting at his best, but his form recently has been of a different class to Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia. The latter shot a 75 for a seven-over total and is not in a happy place.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Colsaerts, just behind Garcia in the list, also finished on seven over and has missed a huge opportunity.
