Chavril: What The Hell?!

Welcome back to Extended Cut - our Soundbytes segment where we take a closer look at the biggest pop story of the week. Today, our focus is on the most surprising news to surface this week: Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger‘s engagement. (We had no idea these Canadian kiddos were even dating!) Shortly following their announcement on Tuesday (Aug. 21) “Chavril” (as the Internet has dubbed the new power couple) showed off the 14-carat ring with which the Nickelback frontman proposed on the cover of Hello Canada. Is this a relationship upgrade for the pop punk princess? What could this holy matrimony mean for Avril and Chad’s respective careers? Watch as we tackle these questions - and look back at pop music’s most WTF couples.

Lady Gaga, Beyonce Make Forbes’ 100 Most Influential Women List

lady gaga

Beyonce and Lady Gaga are now two of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women, among the dozens of billionaires, politicians and moguls also listed.

The pop powerhouses join Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira in the magazine’s list of Celebrity Power Women - thanks to, among other outstanding accomplishments, platinum-selling albums and philanthropic support. (Beyonce worked with the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation, and Lady Gaga served as the spokeswoman for the MAC AIDS Foundation.) Makes sense, since with more than 200 candidates in the running, Forbes boiled down its criteria to just three metrics: “money, media and impact.”

Is the news surprising? Okay, not exactly. Here’s why.

Earlier this month Jay-Z and Beyonce topped the magazine’s list of Highest Paid Celebrity Couples. Plus, according to Forbes itself, Lady Gaga raked in $52 million over the past year, falling only second to Lopez in earnings. What is interesting, though, is these Influential Women have teamed with other Influential Women. As Forbes notes, Beyonce whipped up a “Get Me Bodied” remix - “Move Your Body” - and accompanying video for Michelle Obama‘s “Get Fit” campaign. And Lady Gaga invited 2005 Power Women inductee Oprah Winfrey to the kick-off event for her Born This Way Foundation.

We're Obsessed: Christian Louboutin's Gilded Booties

The Robert Frost poem reads, "nothing gold can stay," but we might argue that these heavy metal Christian Louboutin booties will be a wardrobe MVP for seasons to come. The gilded shade is a welcome update for fall and a stacked heel means you can walk a mile in them and maintain your rocker edge to boot (pun firmly intended). A statement shoe that's not of the car-to-curb variety? Where do we sign up?

Weekend Warrior: Hilary Rhoda Gets Set for Fall

Hilary Rhoda is a girl about town whose style is well worth chronicling. The model is taking notes on her weekend wares exclusively for BAZAAR this summer. Read her latest installment below and check back each week for the chic update.

LOOK 1: This weekend I had enjoyed a bit of both work and play. Today is my brother's 27th birthday, so on Friday I spent the evening at my mother's house in Southampton with family and friends cooking a perfect summer meal with enormous lobsters and fresh veggies from the farmers' market. I am already getting excited for fall weather, so I picked an outfit in my favorite color of the season, a lovely rusty orange. I love the liquid look of this Max Azria skirt — it's one of those pieces you can wear to either a fancy cocktail party or a backyard barbeque. I paired it with a Levi's denim jacket and the most luxe, comfortable t-shirt by A Fine Line. On my toes is Estée Lauder's Nail Lacquer in Pure Red.

LOOK 2: After a relaxing evening with good food and friends celebrating Spencer's birthday, I woke up before the sun and drove back to the city for work. There are no weekends in fashion! It was a gloomy day on Saturday, so I didn't feel so bad about spending most of it inside a studio. I actually bought these Hunter boots last year when I got caught in a thunderstorm while walking in Soho. I had measly ballet flats on with puddles forming inside of them so I had no other choice but to pop into the Wink boutique and buy this awesome lace-up version of the classic rainboot. Crisis averted!
My jeans are by the Australian brand Ksubi that I was turned on to years ago by fellow models Gemma Ward and Jessica Gomes. This Raquel Allegra faded leopard jacket with a slightly shortened sleeve is one of my favorite blazers I own. I bought it a couple years ago in Los Angeles before I left for Coachella because I hadn't realized that it gets very cold at night in the desert! This last-minute buy ended up being one of the pieces I wear the most. I love mixing prints so I wore my striped Vince tank top underneath. It is a great layering piece that I know I will be wearing into fall.

LOOK 3: All day Sunday I was shooting on location on the Upper East Side. We couldn't have asked for more perfect weather. It was a crisp day, reminiscent of the months to come. Can you tell I'm excited for fall? I think it's mainly just for the wardrobe...
I really got into the spirit by test-driving my new IRO leather jacket with black sleeves. I absolutely love this maroon/eggplant color for all seasons. Both my Alexander Wang booties and Proenza Schouler bag are a similar color. My PS1 bag was originally white, but it had gotten so dirty that I stopped wearing it. Last year, I took it to my shoe repairman and asked him to dye it this color. It turned out beautifully, and now it's like having a new bag. I highly recommend this idea for anyone wanting to give a second life to their purse! While I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing white after Labor Day, I decided to really get my wear out of these Helmut Lang trousers. My top is an Isabel Marant dress that I just tucked inside to make it look like a shirt. When the fabric is thin enough like this dress, it can be pulled off. Is it just me, or do my sunglasses and the curlers in my hair add a certain je ne sais quoi to my look?

Nicki Minaj Debuts “Pink Friday” Fragrance

nicki minaj pink friday fragrance

It was only a matter of time before Nicki Minaj released her own fragrance, and that time is now. The rapper (and potential American Idol judge) has premiered her debut perfume, “Pink Friday”, which comes in the shape of not a starship, but of Nicki herself - wig and all.

“I am so excited about my fragrance debut, and am proud to partner with Give Back Brands [the same company behind Justin Bieber's "Somebody" fragrance] for such a personal project,” said Nicki. “I have always been a huge fan of great fragrances; this is yet another extension of my creative expression and I can't wait to share it with the world. I designed this scent and bottle with my Barbz in mind; I know they will love it!”

The rapper made sure that her debut fragrance had that special Nicki Minaj look to it - and what’s more “Nicki” than loads of cleavage and pink wigs? ”I was determined to have my signature pink bob,” Nicki tweeted about the look of the bottle.

So what does it smell like? When one of her Twitter followers asked, Nicki replied, “Like angels playing.” Well, there ya go.

“Pink Friday” will be released late September.

Taylor Swift’s MTV Video Music Awards Promo: Kevin Hart Thinks He’s Taylor’s Muse

taylor swift mtv vma

Kevin Hart Is So Vain

We’re still trying to figure out who the subject is of Taylor Swift‘s disdain in her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”, but MTV VMAs host Kevin Hart thinks he’s solved the mystery - it’s him, obviously! In the latest promo for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, Hart interrupts Swift playing her kiss-off song to berate her for writing a song about him. “I met you like one time two years ago. For like, five minutes,” she says.

Kevin then pulls out a photo of the two of them together, but Swift isn’t falling for it. ”That’s your face Photoshopped on someone else’s body,” deadpans Taylor. (It’s Jake Gyllenhaal‘s body, for those wondering. And yes, we knew that without having to research. Perhaps, like Kevin Hart, we’re a bit too invested in Taylor’s love life.)

Taylor Swift - as well as Green Day, One Direction, Alicia Keys and Pink - will take the stage at the 2012 MTV VMAs, airing Thursday September 6 on MTV.

Linda Johnson Rice on Mom Eunice Johnson’s Fashion Legacy and the Ebony Fashion Fair

Eunice Johnson with Yves Saint Laurent

Let's start with this deliciously descriptive–and dishy–sentence in Cathy Horyn's recent column in the New York Times about the selection process for Eleanor Lambert’s legendary Best Dressed List. "I sensed that…names were dropped into the ring basically so they could be swatted away." Horyn was referring to a meeting between Lambert, founder of the International Best Dressed List, and her selection committee. As they picked–and dropped–names, one that was never even uttered was Eunice Johnson, the well-dressed doyenne of Johnson Publishing Company (publishers of Ebony and Jet Magazines). While her love of couture never impressed the selection committee for the International Best Dressed List, it made an impression on countless lives including that of then-unknown icons like model Pat Cleveland and actor Richard Roundtree (a.k.a. Shaft) with the Ebony Fashion Fair.

Fondly referred to as EFF, the concept was launched by Mrs. Jessie Covington Dent in 1958. Dent was the socialite was wife of Alfred W. Dent, former president emeritus of Dillard University, and friends with Johnson Publishing Founder John H. Johnson. When she approached Mr. Johnson about a mini-fashion fundraiser for a local charity in New Orleans, he told his wife Eunice Johnson about it. Mrs. Johnson immediately came on board, transforming the concept from a local to a global one. The one-off charity fashion show was re-imagined as the Ebony Fashion Fair, an annual traveling fashion show which gave African-Americans an opportunity to see what they'd only read about: dazzling, glamorous, dramatic couture pieces. Johnson personally traveled to London, Milan and Paris where–as the only woman of color–she'd sit front row selecting and purchasing looks from houses like Yves Saint Laurent, Bill Blass and Emanuel Ungaro. Her selections made the rounds from the U.S to the U.K to the Caribbean. In all, EFF presented over 4,000 shows over 50-plus years, and raised more than $55 million dollars that went towards helping charities and college students across the country.

The fair, which shuttered in 2010 soon after Johnson passed away, is enjoying a renaissance of sorts. Rumours of its relaunch have been circulating following an official announcement of an EFF exhibit at the Chicago History Museum, opening March 16, 2013 and running through January 4, 2014. Curators are keeping mum about the exhibit, but fortunately, Johnson's daughter isn't. Linda Johnson Rice, Chairman of Johnson Publishing Company, was kind enough to chat with us about her mom's style, the importance of the Ebony Fashion Fair, and her thoughts of the competition.

Lakme Fashion Week: Swish and stylish set in Mumbai

Fash spell back with a bang: Swish and stylish set in Mumbai

Fashion season in the country kick-started with Lakme Fashion Week's celebratory bash in Mumbai on Thursday night.
Designers, models, photographers and members of the fashion fraternity have made their way to Mumbai to attend the feted five-day event.
Thursday evening saw the swish set get together at F Lounge and Bar for a night of fun and festivity. Come Friday morning, it was back to business at fashion week.

The event opened with the popular Gen Next show that featured new and upcoming faces in the world of fashion. The line-up included aspiring debutant designers Asa Kazingmei, Kavita Sharma, Aniket Satam, Richa Agarwal, Mehak Pruthi, Kanika Seth, Ankit Sharma and Sneha Arora.
As expected, the show had a combination of quirky garments, innovative designs and ethnic influences. The various themes ranged from 'Avatars' to 'Immortals', from 'earthy' to 'rebirth', from 'intellectual' to 'apocalypse.' Avant garde designs, idiosyncratic outfits, tribal prints, homage to traditional wear, simple silhouettes to constructed creations, neon colours and digital prints - all had a spot on the runway.

Next with her debut solo show at the event was Delhibased designer Pia Pauro. The young and feminine collection titled 'Espiritu de Mexico,' celebrated the spirit of Mexico with a showcase of colourful and fun ensembles that had an air of merry making and a carefree Acapulco vibe. Reminiscent of 1970's glamour, the chic and sexy outfits were tailor-made for the party girl who knows how to let her hair loose and have a good time.

From shimmering jumpsuits to figure-hugging dresses, the flirtatious line featured exotic prints inspired by beaches of Tulum and the rainforests. With actress Monica Dogra closing her show, Pauro also set the 'celebrity showstopper' trend in motion.

Designer Nandita Thirani offset Pauro's collection with a presentation of her traditional wear and feminine ready-to-wear collection. Anarkali suits, Maharaja coats, saris and dhoti pants were crafted in a colour palette dominated by shades of wine and creams
